GENESEO, N.Y., July 25, 2025 — In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, the Livingston County Department of Health will host a free breastfeeding support community event at Highland Park in Geneseo on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All residents are welcome to attend and join in recognizing the many benefits of breastfeeding and learn more about local support resources available to families.
Organized by the Livingston County Perinatal Infant Community Health Collaborative (PICHC) and the Livingston-Wyoming Women, Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program, the event will feature lactation counseling, educational resources, a breastfeeding-friendly space, children’s activities, raffles, and light refreshments. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will also be on hand to provide ID badges for children.
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme “Prioritize breastfeeding: Create sustainable support systems,” emphasizes the importance of providing ongoing support and infrastructure to ensure that breastfeeding is accessible and sustainable for all families.
“By investing in breastfeeding support today, we’re ensuring a stronger, healthier future for families in Livingston County,” said Certified Lactation Counselor and Breastfeeding Coordinator Katrina Kelly of the County’s Health Department.
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated globally each year in the first week of August. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breastfeeding can protect infants from infections, reduce allergies, and lower the risk of certain chronic conditions in mothers, including breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
A recipient of the USDA Gold Level Breastfeeding Award of Excellence, the County Health Department is a local leader in breastfeeding support. They offer a wide range of services for pregnant individuals, breastfeeding mothers, and families of young children, including access to breast pumps, nutritional support, and referrals to healthcare providers.
