Home Posted on September 06, 2024

GENESEO, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2024 — Eliza Lonsberry, a 17-year-old senior at Mount Morris Central School District, has been chosen to represent Livingston County on the New York State Governor's Youth Council.

The council brings together 62 young leaders between the ages of 13 and 21 from each county across the state to address key issues affecting NYS youth. Council members work to facilitate two-way communication with policy-makers to better address youth and community issues.

“I have lived my entire life in Livingston County and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to represent my home on a state level,” said Lonsberry. “I'm truly honored to be able to take the issue I have seen in my life and try to make real change about it. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Lonsberry brings a number of significant accolades and extensive leadership experience to her new role. A 2023 recipient of the Livingston County Teen Recognition Award and a 2023 New York State Senate Youth Leadership Award Program nominee, she also serves as 2025 class president, president of her school’s drama club, and an active member of the county’s Youth Court.

Mary Guldenschuh is the deputy director for the Livingston County Youth Bureau, which is responsible for the recruitment and selection of county candidates for the Governor’s Youth Council. In February, she traveled to Albany with Lonsberry where the accomplished student met with elected officials in the senate and assembly to advocate for Youth Bureau funding.

"Eliza has proven to be an effective speaker who can hold a conversation with intelligence, poise and focus," said Guldenschuh. "She has sound opinions and can convey them with ease and confidence. She is a standout among her peers and I'm certain she will be a catalyst for action on this council."

Lonsberry plans to focus on creating equal opportunities for youth across New York State as a member of the Governor’s Youth Council.

“By recognizing that some children are born with better support structures, opportunities, and connections it is possible to think of solutions that bring everyone to an even playing field,” she explained.

Lonsberry is only the second Livingston County youth to serve on the Governor's Youth Council since its inception in 2020. She will be required to participate in regional and statewide meetings several times each month to better inform state government on issues and challenges across a number of fronts. Topics identified for discussion include, Youth Voice & Engagement: Creating Opportunities; Focusing on Youth Mental Health; and Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, among others.
