Livingston County Works to Secure $85,000 Federal Grant for Nunda Active Transportation Plan

Home Posted on January 28, 2025

GENESEO, N.Y., Jan. 28, 2025 – Livingston County was recently recognized as a potential recipient of $85,000 in Federal Highway Administration grant funding in support of the Nunda Active Transportation Plan. Set to begin in the spring, the plan aims to use data-driven recommendations to improve walking, biking, and public transit options in the Town and Village of Nunda, the Hamlet of Dalton, and nearby areas.

Livingston County will serve as the lead agency for the project, working in close collaboration with Town and Village of Nunda officials. The development of Nunda’s Active Transportation Plan aligns with the county’s long-term strategic planning goals which, among other objectives, seek to improve the quality of life for residents through enhanced transportation infrastructure. The Nunda Active Transportation Plan’s comprehensive approach aims to benefit residents by:

  • Enhancing safe walking, biking, and transit options to vital destinations, such as schools, workplaces, shops, and recreational areas
  • Ensuring equitable access to transportation options
  • Contributing to the reduction of climate-changing emissions
  • Improving traffic safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users
  • Positioning Nunda for future transportation project grant opportunities

Livingston County Planning Director Megan Crowe emphasized the project's significance, stating, "This initiative reflects our dedication to creating a more connected, safe, and sustainable county. We're very excited to work with such a vibrant and ambitious local community to bring about positive change. By improving transportation options through collaborative partnerships, including our work with Department of Health programs, we're addressing a significant need in the area while investing in the well-being of our county residents."

Nunda Town Supervisor Merilee Walker said she is excited for the opportunity to study potential transportation safety improvements in the Village and Town of Nunda. She highlighted pedestrian traffic along busy roadways as a particular area of concern.

I live on State Street and notice the pedestrian traffic heading to the local grocery store, and know that the sidewalks end at Vermont Street. This means that both kids and adults have to walk along State Route 408, which has a heavy volume of traffic.”

Walker said she worked to advocate for the Hamlet of Dalton’s inclusion in the plan, adding, “The elementary school is located in the hamlet, and the sidewalks are practically non-existent. Our budgets don't really allow for extensive spending on sidewalk projects, so we look forward to recommendations that the experts can provide for improvement. We also are a ‘Be Well’ community, and encourage biking, walking and exercise, especially in a safe manner. The recommendations for crossings, stop signs, additional sidewalks and bike trails will be welcomed.”

Village of Nunda Mayor Jack Morgan added, “The Village of Nunda is excited about the potential that this grant offers for safe, available and environmentally friendly transportation in our community. Many thanks are due to all those who worked so hard on this project. We look forward to working with the Livingston County team in bringing the potential of this grant to fruition.”

The Genesee Transportation Council included the Nunda Active Transportation Plan in their annual budget, known as the Unified Planning Work Program. If approved by the council, county officials expect to have the plan ready for implementation by late 2026. Livingston County residents are encouraged to participate in the committee’s ongoing public review process, which runs from January 13 through February 12, 2025.
