GENESEO, N.Y., July 23, 2024 — The Livingston County Department of Health will host a World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) event at Highland Park in Geneseo on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All community members are invited to take part in the yearly celebration, which promotes awareness of WBW and the many benefits of breastfeeding.
The Livingston County Perinatal Infant Community Health Collaborative (PICHC) program and Livingston-Wyoming Women, Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program have teamed up to present the event. They plan to provide attendees with valuable breastfeeding support, education, and resources during the free festivities. This year’s theme is “Closing the Gap,” highlighting the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in society, with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crises.
Livingston County Department of Health’s Melanie Planck is a Certified Lactation Counselor and Highland Park WBW event coordinator. She emphasized the importance of hosting the event for County residents who may not realize the amount of support available for breastfeeding women through the County.
“Promoting and educating the community about breastfeeding is crucial everywhere, but it's particularly needed in small, rural areas like Livingston County,” she explained. “Our goal is to ensure that all mothers have access to the support and information they need to make informed decisions about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding a newborn brings a stronger bond between mom and baby and has a profoundly positive impact on the child’s health."
Additional activities and resources at this year’s WBW event include:
- Sheriff's Office providing ID badges for kids
- Lactation Counselors offering advice and support
- A designated breastfeeding friendly space
- Activities for children
- Mommy pampering services
- Raffle items
The event organizers will also acknowledge community members, businesses, and organizations that have supported mothers through their breastfeeding journey by presenting certificates to those nominated.
