MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., Sept. 23, 2025 — The New York State Archives has awarded Livingston County $70,475 in funding through the Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (LGRMIF).
The LGRMIF grant is dedicated to improving records management and archival administration in New York’s local governments. Livingston County’s Records Management team will use the funding to map electronic records stored within software tools, identify outdated or duplicate materials, and evaluate where cybersecurity tools should be focused to protect resident information and provide secure access to information for County staff and the public.
“According to Statista, 90% of the world’s data was created in the last 24 months, with an amazing 407 terabytes created per day,” explained Megan Sokolow, Livingston County’s records inventory supervisor. “Every business, organization and government is grappling with managing this volume of information. Having a clear snapshot of the data we maintain at Livingston County is an important part of ensuring our success in managing that responsibility here. What this means for County residents is safer stewardship of their information, and hopefully also cost reductions in our budget lines.”
Sokolow said the project will take approximately 35 weeks to complete. The Records Management office will tackle the project alongside a team of experienced professional consultants, including individuals who have worked for the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Marshal Service and the U.S. Small Business Administration. These experts will work to produce a high-quality inventory and several reports on the County’s information needs, recommendations for improvements, and current strengths.
Livingston County has secured 13 LGRMIF awards over the program’s 36-year history. The County won a LGRMIF grant award each of the last three years totaling more than $153,000, which it used to support countywide records and information management improvements.
