How do I know if my child has been exposed to lead?
While lead poisoning is 100% preventable, lead continues to be a major cause of poisoning among children. Thousands of children in NYS are at risk. The only way to know if your child has been exposed to lead is through a blood test.
- All children in New York State MUST have a lead test at ages one and two. Check with your child’s health care provider to see if your child has been tested for lead.
- Pregnant women should also be tested for lead exposure by their prenatal health care provider because lead exposure can lead to miscarriage or low birth weight.
How can I reduce my child's risk of lead exposure?
- Keep your home clean and dust free. Do not sweep. Pick up any loose or chipped paint. Wet wash regularly with a mop or cloth, warm water, and an all-purpose cleaner.
- Wash your child’s hands frequently, especially before meals and snacks.
- Feed your child foods high in calcium, iron, and vitamin C.
- Run cold water 1-3 minutes in the morning before using, if you have older plumbing. Only use cold water for cooking, making baby formula and mixing drinks.
